Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks hit the ATM industry hard in 2024, with an estimated $2 billion in losses worldwide. Large financial losses have already been reported in 2025 by independent ATM operators. It is more important than ever to protect your business and CDS is providing solutions to make that easier and simpler.
CDS, the largest ATM owner and operator in the world, delivers a more secure ATM processing environment for ISOs by using cryptographic protocols that guard against MITM attacks and other cybercrime attacks.
We are pleased to announce that we support and offer Message Authentication Code (MAC) encryption (commonly known as MACing) in an easier to implement package across a wide range of retail ATMs in the United States.
MACing is a cryptographic technique used to ensure the authenticity and integrity of messages between the ATM and a processing network. If supported and enabled on an ATM and enabled by the processor, MACing is the best and last line of defense to help mitigate Man-in-the-Middle attacks. MACing is an accepted security layer by major financial institutions.
CDS applies MACing on our own ATM fleet and MACing is currently available across all OEMs and with the following combinations:
